Really, how much different are they from humans? At a very basic physiological level, we have a handful similarities. They have bones and brains. They breathe air. They eat food, making them not plants. Hey, we do all that shit too.Pigeons aren't that far removed from us socially, either. In fact, it could even be argued that they're morally superior - after all, pigeons generally only fight over the important stuff, like food and mates (NOT who wore whose headband). They communicate. And when you get down to the nitty-gritty, there really aren't that many discrepancies.
