Teaching is
a constant stream of ridiculousness.
possessing the ability to gain control of 34 children without saying a word.
not for the inflexible or the orderly.
anticipating.
hugging.
providing structure, routine and discipline for children who've never had it before.
the hum of the overhead projector.
the smell of chalk dust.
applying Band-Aids.
keeping multiple plates spinning at one time.
twirling the jump rope at recess.
fixing belts, shoes, zippers, veils and braids.
pulling loose teeth.
picking a million things up and then leaving them a million places around the room.
feeding fish, snails, and guppies.
feeding children.
saying "Shh!"
putting a hand on a shoulder.
stapling.
answering the phone.
calling on the kid who doesn't get it or isn't paying attention.
celebrating the smallest improvements.
IEPs for LDs, CIs, EIs, and various other abbreviations.
killing flies.
noting lice.
noting scabies, cigarette burns, bruises and marijuana stench.
calling CPS.
attempting to explain extremely abstract concepts.
flying by the seat of your pants.
rewarding!
Yup.
Clean up your area,
