Existence 2009

Even though many of you probably aren't interested in the banalities of my life, I find it helpful sometimes to write down where I'm at. Puts things in perspective.

- I "graduate" in a month and 3 days. Commencement's May 9th. That Monday, the 11th, marks the start of Maymester, during which I will be in my classroom full-time and teaching for at least an hour every day until May 29th. Maymester is like three weeks of half-assed student teaching with a lot of ridiculous projects and papers you have to be doing at the same time. Howevs, my class (second grade) is going to be studying Michigan waterways, and we are planning to take a field trip to Lake Michigan sometime during Maymester. A lot of the kids in my class have never seen a great lake, so that's pretty exciting. I may bitch and moan about all the mindless work I have to do to appease the educ department at this place, but at the end of the day, when I'm actually going to be spending time with second-graders, I'm happy. And this is what makes me sure I should, in fact, be going into teaching.

- School is terrible, nothing new there. I have a grand total of 3 massive, research-based papers due in the next three weeks that I haven't even started reading for. GRAND. My scholastic indifference is rapidly spiraling into full-blown apathy. As of right now, I could fail all my classes and still graduate. And everyone knows that all that matters is that little stamped piece of paper.

- For student teaching my friend and I are looking at renting a house in Albion. At work the other day I mentioned to my boss that were were searching for places to live from August-December, and she mentioned that she had a friend who just happened to be looking for short-term tenants. Gotta love connections! The price is VERY reasonable and the house is in a cute, nice area like 3 blocks from the school we'll both be teaching at. Although I am wholly unexcited about spending money for what is, truthfully, ANOTHER semester of college, at least I could be living in (drumroll please) NON-CAMPUS HOUSING, paying my own rent and pretending to actually be working by student teaching. Which might be nice and fulfilling. We're going to look at the house this week.

- After interviewing with a handful of camps, I have decided to stay home this summer and work as a lifeguard at our local pool (well, banking on it - they're supposed to call me back today). It's going to be really weird not doing camp, but it will be kind of nice to stay at home, see all my friends and have a flexible gig after three crazy summers. And I must say that my tan will be quite choice.

- I let it rain. I clear it out.

- Whoever made that five dollar footlong commercial is a genius. Why didn't I think of that? Would've spared me from a liberal arts education.

Bye.

I like reading about your life.

And people do look at your transcripts, so don't give up yet. I've been passed over on jobs because my grades weren't high enough even though I have that piece of paper from MSU.

The house sounds like a gem...hope it works out for you.
