What is with everyone dying? Specifically, young people on Interstate 94?
The day after Thanksgiving a 21-year-old Albion student was hit by a drunk driver on I-94, just a mile ahead of where I went off the road. He was from Port Huron, and is the seventh young person from that town to die in the past year. His death was obviously an unfortunate accident, but my family is from Port Huron and I can safely say that many of these tragedies were the result of two things: money and partying. Port Huron is notorious for its party scene. The wealthier kids in Port Huron drive fast cars and have boats, and drink and do drugs while operating both. They jump in the St. Clair river and drive their jet skis around huge freighters and drive back from Canada hammered. They live at a breakneck speed and it's beginning to catch up with them.
A kid who grew up across the street from me was also killed in a car accident this weekend. He was traveling on (you guessed it) I-94 and ran into a cement guard rail. He and I used to play street hockey together, and I remember once bringing him his homework when he was sick. He was wearing Spiderman pajamas. He was also distantly related to the hockey player Ray Bourque, was an only child, and was always one of the "smart kids" in school. Remembering all these little things about him makes his death strangely personal to me. We weren't friends, but we could so easily have been growing up as neighbors. It's rather disturbing.
Not a very good post, but all's I got to say is: Many of the good die young, but the good also live to see their 25th birthday. I reckon I'd like to see more of the latter. Don't be schtooooooopid, use your head.
